why the hell did Cameron wear a Gordie Howe Detroit Red Wings sweater in Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

It's absolutely undeniable that Ferris Bueller's Day Off rules despite two nearly ruinous errors- the fact that they spend the day at a Flubs game, which I can get over because it is a school day and the White Sox weren't playing many day games at the time, and the fact that Cameron inexplicably wears a fucking Red Wings sweater instead of the Blackhawks' classic Indian Head. Totally unexceptable. The Hawks were actually pretty good at the time, finishing first in the good old black and blue Norris Division for the 1985-1986 season.

Well, inexplicable until recently; Gordie Howe was recently interviewed on Sports Illustrated.com and revealed this chestnut:

May 15, Sports Illustrated: SI.com: I was watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off the
other day and your jersey was on the screen the whole time since Ferris' friend
Cameron is wearing it. I was wondering if you knew that your jersey would be a
part of the movie.
Howe: Oh yeah, I sent them the jersey. They asked me for
the jersey and I sent it out. It was nice seeing the No. 9 on the big screen. I
had a lot of proud moments in that jersey

WTF? Why did "they" ask for a Wings jersey? No self-respecting true Chicagoan would be count dead in a Wings jersey. Surely we would have been pummelled in the streets by angry tomahawk wielding Hawks fans. Hell, Ferris should have pulled it over his head and delivered a series of punishing haymakers.

For shame, John Hughes.

As a Bueller expert, I've actually wondered that before.

John Hughes was born in Michigan.

All of his 80s movies are Chicago-centric and there's one little non Chicago hiccup and you are ready to kill him. There are better reasons to kill him, ie pretty much every movie after Uncle Buck.

Beethoven's 5h? Home Alone 4?

I would assume he wore as to compliment Cameron's personality, which would seem to be the kind that would root for that year's worst team in the league because it matches his pessimistic point of view on life. I'm merely assuming, I'm not sure. Either way, it is a bit baffling.
