safety suit for aviators (1910)

From the pages Popular Mechanics, which was a lot more badass in 1910 when the emerging science of aviation was in full flower. I like how the safety suit is accented by a crisply creased pair of dress trousers and freshly shined shoes.

pigtails fad (1940s)

Judy Canova- read more about her on the always fascinating I'm Learning to Share

Pigtails on Shirley Slade, pilot trainee (1943)

Co-ed Lenore Tingle from Life Magazine archives.

Pigtails on a felt bonnet on a comely young lass.

Actress Joan Fontaine (1942) meooowrrr- how natural and cute is her smile? And the perfect amount of sun-kissed freckles!

Co-ed Ann Teal Smith (1941) Hubba hubba!

This last dame? Some skirt named Norma Jean Baker.

I stumbled upon the pigtails trend whilst wasting hours on the Life Magazine image archives on Google. It seems that country singer Judy Canova was the originator of the trend. Her "country" look clearly influence the look of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz (1939)
It seems odd that such a cute and practical look inspired such a trend, but considering the complicated hair-dos of the late Thirties and Forties, pigtails must have seemed like a godsend. I've always had a thing for pigtails.

incredible letterhead for The Alfred Dolge celebrated felt slippers

I absolutely love this kind of letter head and logo. I love how the most banal necessities become "celebrated" and grandoise in translation. i can't get enough of this stuff.

I grabbed this one from the Emergeance of Advertising collection of Duke University, but here are some other items of interest:
Sheaff Ephemera
and

X-men t-shirt offer (1965)

Charles Xavier claims that "the whole country is going t-shirt wild!"

That shirt is UNCANNY! I dig the original X-Men in their original costumes. I wonder if Marvel is still at 625 Madison Ave and if they still have any of those tees somewhere?

why the hell did Cameron wear a Gordie Howe Detroit Red Wings sweater in Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

It's absolutely undeniable that Ferris Bueller's Day Off rules despite two nearly ruinous errors- the fact that they spend the day at a Flubs game, which I can get over because it is a school day and the White Sox weren't playing many day games at the time, and the fact that Cameron inexplicably wears a fucking Red Wings sweater instead of the Blackhawks' classic Indian Head. Totally unexceptable. The Hawks were actually pretty good at the time, finishing first in the good old black and blue Norris Division for the 1985-1986 season.

Well, inexplicable until recently; Gordie Howe was recently interviewed on Sports Illustrated.com and revealed this chestnut:

May 15, Sports Illustrated: SI.com: I was watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off the
other day and your jersey was on the screen the whole time since Ferris' friend
Cameron is wearing it. I was wondering if you knew that your jersey would be a
part of the movie.
Howe: Oh yeah, I sent them the jersey. They asked me for
the jersey and I sent it out. It was nice seeing the No. 9 on the big screen. I
had a lot of proud moments in that jersey

WTF? Why did "they" ask for a Wings jersey? No self-respecting true Chicagoan would be count dead in a Wings jersey. Surely we would have been pummelled in the streets by angry tomahawk wielding Hawks fans. Hell, Ferris should have pulled it over his head and delivered a series of punishing haymakers.

For shame, John Hughes.

a free gift for you just for the asking

I picked up these two Girl Scout jackets at a thrift store on the cheap. This level of personalization seems to be a lost art, no? It doesn't seem like people like to socialize with others, let alone actually achieve something. I wonder how the Girl Scouts are doing in general?

Anyway, the only reason I'm doing this blog in the first place is to connect with like-minded people out there and to share the cool stuff that I pick up in my daily time wastings. So rather than selling the patches individually on eBay, I'm offering them to you, my loyal reader, for free if you follow this blog. Simply follow me, email me your address (my email is bulldogvintage at yahoo dot com) and I'll send you out a patch and a nice letter as a special thank you! Tell yr friends- I have hundreds of these patches to give away! See one you like in the photos? Just ask for it!

PS these were a total pain to get off of the jacket- this scout's Mother deserves a merit badge for durable and professional quality patch sewing! I went through a brand new seam ripper getting them off!

* update- the "sing with wings" patch is gone.
