UGA VII, the University of Georgia’s bulldog mascot unexpectedly passed away at age 4 from heart disease. Though I am a die-hard LSU fan and wish only the worst for Bulldog Nation, I love real actual drooling bulldogs and Uga was a very handsome specimen. Pour out some kibble in his memory.

"Uga VII, or "Uga VI's Loran's Best" as was his registered name, was latest in the 54-year line of mascots owned by the Seilers. "Mother woke up this morning and said she thought Uga didn't feel too good," said Swann Seiler, her voice quivering. "Daddy got up with him and he could tell something was wrong. We have a vet [Sonny Lester] that's practically on-call just for Uga and he was there in five minutes. They took him to a [veterinary] hospital quick as they could but he didn't make it."
“We are all in a state of shock,” Sonny Seiler said. “We had no warning whatsoever.”
In fact, Seiler said Uga VII had just been given a clean bill of health from the UGA vet school a week earlier... Burial details have not been finalized. The mascots are interred in a mausoleum built in the southwest corner of Sanford Stadium. Georgia is the only university in the nation to bury its mascots within the confines of its stadium."

I saw a lot of young girls dressed as "Eighties girls" for Halloween. I know it's easy to hit up American Apparel and be done with it. But to really do it right, you have to be subtle. An interlocking and work out towel and suddenly you've taken it to another level. Get two of your BFFs together and reinact "20 minute work out"!

I'm pretty sure I had my first masturbatory experience as a kid watching this show.

Grabbed not only for the classic Golden State Warriors uniform complete with matching wristbands, but also the incredible deshiki looking shirt and sansa belt slacks wilt is rocking. It almost looked like he was giving Rick Barry the finger rather than pointing at hist armpit.

Ah yes, KangaROOS! My all time favorite athlete, Walter Payton, represented ROOS back in the day, so I had to get white ROOS cleats for baseball and football. What's up with that ad copy? "For men, women, kids of all kinds. For fun." Not mentioned in the copy is that back in the day, the ROOS velcro pockets were rumored to be the ideal storage spot for cocaine and it was an urban legend that wearing ROOS was an indicator to the rest of the world that you were 'holding". Such was not the case at my Catholic school's 4th grade class.

They should remake these- the hipsters of the world would eat these Rippers up!

I'm a vintage t-shirt fanatic so this is like pornography to me. You would be surprised how little there is on the internet or anywhere for that matter about the history of t-shirts. Yes, there are some books out there, but they are more like coffee table books rather than what i'm looking for- a hardcore guide book for the hardcore vintage freak. My bud Jimmy at Defunk'd has put together one of the most useful guides out there.

Most of the companies that produced vintage t-shirts are long gone or have been purchased by much larger companies. Even the heavy hitters like Fruit of the Loom and Hanes have next to no records of when particular tags were used or when particular model numbers were produced. The raving vintage lunatic is left to stitch together the pieces of vintage t-shirt history through old catalogs, magazines, movies, and by sharing tips with fellow travellers. This kind of stuff really appeals to the historical archivist in me, so I've been working on putting together a cohesive history for the past year or so. Wish me luck!

Beats the heck out of their plain jane "uniforms" now- or is that Plane Jane? Get it?! I'm brilliant.

From Sports Illustrated 1975. This back when Kareem played for the Milwaukee Bucks. This was considered a cool look only by soon-to-be bald giants and the cast of What's Happenin'. This fresh and ultra 70s Kareem in action shot accompanied the article. The Bucks really should bring back this colorway and script print. They can hold off on the religion-revealing short shorts.

yo yo yo, caught this on the Antiques Roadshow, by far my guiltiest pleasure on television. This silkscreened on denim banner came out of a general store in Camp Verde, Arizona and was valued at $1800-2000. I guess that episode was a rerun from 2006, so I would expect to go for slightly less now, but holy shit, I would LOVE to own that thing! This bad larry is 10 feet long and from the 1950s.

Ken Burns' documentary "Huey Long" seems like an unlikely place to find great American vintage style (though Long was a dapper gentleman himself), but Burns' 1985 documentary captures a time and place that has since disappeared- and not just the Kingfish. The folks that he interviewed had a unique style that took me back to my own childhood in Louisiana- a unique and particular style that has since vanished. The landed Southern aristocrats he interviewed looked the part, as did they journalists, historians, and Cajuns.

I haven't been back to Louisiana much in the past years, but I suspect that the Wal-Martificiation of America has also not left Sportsman's Paradise unscathed. The folks have long past as has a unique part of America and American history.

I stumbled upon the pigtails trend whilst wasting hours on the Life Magazine image archives on Google. It seems that country singer Judy Canova was the originator of the trend. Her "country" look clearly influence the look of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz (1939)
It seems odd that such a cute and practical look inspired such a trend, but considering the complicated hair-dos of the late Thirties and Forties, pigtails must have seemed like a godsend. I've always had a thing for pigtails.

It's absolutely undeniable that Ferris Bueller's Day Off rules despite two nearly ruinous errors- the fact that they spend the day at a Flubs game, which I can get over because it is a school day and the White Sox weren't playing many day games at the time, and the fact that Cameron inexplicably wears a fucking Red Wings sweater instead of the Blackhawks' classic Indian Head. Totally unexceptable. The Hawks were actually pretty good at the time, finishing first in the good old black and blue Norris Division for the 1985-1986 season.

Well, inexplicable until recently; Gordie Howe was recently interviewed on Sports Illustrated.com and revealed this chestnut:

I picked up these two Girl Scout jackets at a thrift store on the cheap. This level of personalization seems to be a lost art, no? It doesn't seem like people like to socialize with others, let alone actually achieve something. I wonder how the Girl Scouts are doing in general?

Anyway, the only reason I'm doing this blog in the first place is to connect with like-minded people out there and to share the cool stuff that I pick up in my daily time wastings. questionable fad: Confederate flags (1952)

A unique conglomeration of events in American history seemed to converge in the early 1950s to spur on a the Confederate flag fad. The 100th anniversary of the Civil War was just around the corner, the differences between the South and the North became more overt as segregation began to be changed in de facto and de jure ways in the early 50s (see the Jackie Robinson story of the late 40s, as well as the birth of the Civil Rights movement around that time) and white Southerners began to resist the beginning of the end of overt and socially acceptable white priviledge, and lastly rebellious teen culture just began to creep towards the mainstream from society's fringes. There's a Master's thesis in there somewhere, but I'll just leave it there.

The point is: fads seem to come out of nowhere, but they have a social cause and ignition point. These causes and igniters tell us about our society.

I was just checking out my buddy Jimmy's blog over at defunk'd which features an incredible ebay find you must see- go ahead and check it out, i'll wait- but it got me thinking about the utilitarian beauty of the handprinted t-shirt. I remembered this photo by Sid Grossman that I saw a few weeks ago. It stopped me in my tracks because I thought that handprinted t-shirts were an outgrowth of punk rather than at the very roots of nascent American teenage culture. I shall look deeper into this.

How perfect is it that this young lady took to adding the legendary post-WWII graffiti "Kilroy was here" to her t-shirt? The famous slogan is shrouded in mystery, but it somehow caught the imagination of a generation. "Kilroy was here" is akin to the modern practice of idiotically commenting "first!" to a blog entry or news story on the internet- there's no point but there's a certain thrill to getting there first and having everyone else who follows see that you have already staked claim to this turf. Supposedly, James Kilroy was a shipyard inspector in Quincy, MA, during World War II and would chalk "Kilroy was here" on every bulkhead he inspected. GIs were baffled by this ubiquitous slogan, but took to spreading this simple and mysterious image throughout the world. The joke is not so much what the phrase says, but where it would turn up. A perhaps apocryphal story claims that an outhouse was specially constructed for only the world leaders at Pottsdam. As Stalin emerged from christening the outhouse, he supposedly queried an aide, "Who is Kilroy?"

I absolutely LOVE the style of all of the Rosie the Riveters. This particular photographer, Alfred T. Palmer, was especially gifted at capturing their hardworking femininity. I love how women of that era managed to be stylish and feminine while keeping the world safe for Democracy.

Pendleton is still pretty right on in my book. I love their flannel shirts and hunting jackets. I still have my heart set on an old school Pendleton blanket from before WWII.

I just listed this gorgeous Swatch camp shirt on ebay. There was not much about Swatch funwear on the internet, but these were all the rage when I was in Junior High. Unfortunately, I could not afford Swatch gear when I was a kid, though I did bully a poor Indian kid at my high school in to selling me his X swatch a few years later at the tail end of the Swatch trend- which I later sold on ebay after unfortunatley shattering the face a few years ago after wearing it almost every day for 10+ years. I really dig the comic book art on this shirt, but the internet couldn't help me to find the name of the artiste'. There are a few print advertisements on eBay for Funwear, confirming the date on this item.

I've never seen a White Sox jacket like this- perhaps Mr. Einhorn had it commissioned for himself? Eddie Einhorn, who is still part owner of the Sox, made his fortune in syndicating college basketball in the Fifties and Sixties and later became the head of CBS Sports.

I dig how the stripes echo but do not copy the horizontal stripes of the early Eighties White Sox uniforms. I'm sure this thing was 100% polyester.

I'm not real big on ladies clothing, except in a rumpled pile at the end of my bed- am I right, fellas? huh huh! But I know what I like. I'm kind of breaking my own rule about focusing only on American style since Britt was born in Stockholm (another city on my must-visit list), but this photo was too good to not pass on. Ms. Eklund in her prime made anything look good.

Gentlemen, this is even more proof that if you are outrageously funny and fabulously wealthy, you get the best dames. Keep working on those prat falls. Britt and Peter were married from 1964-1968, arguably Britt's prime era of doability, those she was extremely hot in The Man with the Golden Gun, the ninth James Bond film which opened in 1974. Her later taste in dudes took a real plunge in the 70s, seeing how she dated Rod freaking Stewart, but she bounced back in the Eighties, marrying Slim Jim Phantom, drummer of the Stray Cats!

Anyway, cool dress and purse I guess, but it takes a world-class dame like Britt to do it justice!

"To the best of our knowledge, this is one of only three 1924 Chicago World Tour
uniforms in existence...The cream-colored flannel jersey is lettered “Chicago”
across the front in two-tone red on navy felt. Identical “Flag” patches adorn
each sleeve. Both the sleeve ends and collar display a red and blue piping. The
front of the collar also features four small felt “Stars” (two red and two blue). A “Spalding” label appears in the collar as does a white strip tag lettered “Chicago –
Picinich – 40” (team, player, jersey size). The name “Picinich” is stitched in navy on the rear right tail...The 1924 World Tour was the third such tour made by the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox, with the first two having taken place in 1913/1914 and 1917, respectively. As stated in the official program, “The object and aim of the tour of Europe by America’s two great baseball teams from its two largest cities, namely New York and Chicago, has a twofold object. One is to exhibit America’s National Game in foreign lands – by the game’s greatest exponents, namely the New York Giants, champions of the National League, and the Chicago White Sox, members of the American League. But the higher and greater object of this trip to Europe is to try and transplant America’s game in athletic and sport-loving countries – who desire to adopt some game that has both the athletic and mental attributes conducive to the physical development of the youth of their country.” Like the previous two trips made by the clubs, the nucleus of each roster consisted of members of the Giants and White Sox, but each lineup was augmented by players from other Major League clubs. Val Picinich was a member of the Boston Red Sox in 1924 and, along with Washington’s Muddy Ruel, was one of the two catchers on the White Sox roster. The tour took the clubs to seven countries, including England, France, Italy, and Germany, and was highly celebrated at the time. It must be noted that world baseball tours were very infrequent, and the 1924 tour marked the last one made by the Giants and White Sox. The next major world tour did not occur until 1931, when an all-star contingent, led by Lou Gehrig, traveled to Japan."

Dear God! It's bad enough that the Sox home open was SNOWED OUT, but to stumble across this absolutely beautiful jersey has got me itching for the beginning of baseball season in the worst way! When I'm an eccentric internet millionaire, I will buy these kinds of things on a whim for my White Sox museum/pinball emporium/ punk rock show space/ vintage video game arcade/ vintage record listening club and exchange that I will open within walking distance of my season tickets at Comiskey behind home plate. How beautiful is this jersey? I love the timeless logos, especially the patch above which was affixed to the shorty short shorts. How frigging incredible are those stirrups? Before you fall in love, hold on to your wallet as this complete uniform is went for over $12k.

I couldn't find an in-action shots of the #2 all time free throw shooter rocking those stirrups.

Someone needs to print that head dress logo on a t-shirt for the rest of us.

I am selling this fantastic older cheerleader sweater on ebay, and was unable to properly date it. I guessed that it was from the late 70s, based on the overall design- especially those collars.

I contacted the good folks at Dehen, the manufacturer of this garment, and they graciously and promptly confirmed that it was shown in their 1979-80 catalog. They are still going strong and still making all of their products in the US of A. Be sure to check out their site for some incredibly awesome varsity jackets that I will eventually custom order for Bulldog Vintage when we hit the big time! "Just came across this eBay auction for a vintage Chicago White Sox baseball Jacket from 30s-40s. The jacket is classic varsity jacket with wool body/leather sleeves and made by Von Lengerke & Antoine. The seller states the jacket was given to a relative of the owner during his childhood. As a boy, he had the privilege of attending a White Sox practice, and the team manager was so impressed by his enthusiasm that he took the jacket off of a player's back and gave it to him as a memento. The jacket had a buy it now of $2,500 and ended with a best offer of $1,650!!! In a way this jacket is priceless and Im not sure how many if any are floating around, this kind of memorabilia belongs in Cooperstown IMO. I love seeing stuff like this pop up on eBay and hearing the story (if there is one) behind the item!!! "

I love the color scheme and illustrations on this one. When was the last time you read a clothing manufacturer bragging about cementing their seams? There's not much about this company on the internet, any info is welcome!

Excerpt from "Boot and Shoe Recorder" a trade magazine from 1922:

"Baltimore- Big Fall Business Ahead- The local retail merchant has been experiencing the usual between-season business but is looking forward to a banner season this fall. About all the stores are showing advance fall styles...indications are that perforated patterns will sell big this coming season."

Dull as dishwater, but again, tells a little something about the hidden history of America. There are HUNDREDS of small time shoe companies listed in this boring yet facinating trade magazine. There used to be a thriving domestic shoe industry, scattered throughout the country and highly responsive to local tastes, valuing quality of construction, but at the same time, looking to expand out of market by producing snappy catalogs such as the one above.

I love the Buffalo Bill Cody style button front of this jersey and the sheer manly charisma of this dapper gent who fills out his uniform. The Lancaster Ironsides of the Eastern League seemed to only exist for the 1884 season, where they competed with the ingeniously named Lancaster Lancasters for the hearts of Lancasterers.

According to the Lancaster Historical Society's website:

"At the end of the 1884 season, the teams finally agreed to a play-off series. The event brought thousands of fans to Lancaster's ballparks. After seven close games, the Ironsides took the title as Lancaster's best professional team. In the following days, the two teams joined for celebration and even played a game to benefit one of the Ironsides players who had fallen on hard times. In the end, the players showed little animosity toward one another, but the owners and the fans found that having two baseball teams in Lancaster strained their love of the game. Only the Lancasters continued into the 1885 season."
